Just a bit of fun

Here is a quick celebration video we made for fun to celebrate the making and completion of our music video - We have also posted this video onto our Twitter page, we felt that by uploading this video for our audience to view alongside our more serious and professional videos, creates more of a relationship between us, as the producers and them as the audience. They can see us in a fun environment having fun with our product, seeing us as individuals as well as professional producers.

Main Character Profile

Here is our character profile for the dancer- the only character starring in our music video. We had many different ideas of how to represent the character and try to create a character that audiences can relate to.

Interpretations/Storyline

Obviously, a music video can be interpreted in different ways depending on what person is viewing it. We decided to create our individual interpretation and explain the storyline of the music video- giving a bit more insight into it and what we wanted to achieve when creating that particular section.

Analysing The Lyrics

This is an analysis of the lyrics to 'Of The Night' by Bastille. As our piece has no lip-syncing, we didn't want to be literal with the lyrics but focus on symbolism and a metaphorical approach instead. We felt that this was a more artistic approach and opened up many more opportunities creatively within the production process of our music video

As we looked deeper into the possible meanings of the lyrics, we noticed that within the subtext a theme of escapism and the human need for it could be suggested within lyrics such as: "ease you of your pain" "put some joy upon my face" "sunshine in an empty place". These could be interpreted in another way such as a lost love for example but we felt that to focus on this as a theme was far too predictable and so we decided to focus on escapism as our central idea. In doing this we began to think in detail about what devices people use to escape from reality and concluded that drug use, alcoholism and focusing obsessively on a hobby or subject that you're passionate about (such as dancing) are a few of the main ways people 'escape' .In addition to this we detected an opportunity to represent themes of obsession, passion and confusion surrounding personal identity (represented through an avoidance of revealing too much of our performers identity, in our music video, in order to maintain anonymity as a theme too.)

Audience Feedback

Above is a video I (Ruby Elgram) put together on my ipad. We filmed some of our audience members after they had watched our final music video. In this video they are discussing their thoughts, views and opinions on our music video.

As a group we were very pleased with our audience feedback as seen in the video the audience mention various feelings they felt and themes they noticed throughout the music video which we intended our audience to feel and pick up on. We feel we have reached the aims of our music video.

What Is A Focus Group?

What is a focus group?

The definition of a focus group is...
"A demographically diverse group of people assembled to participate in a guided discussion about a particular product before it is launched, or to provide ongoing feedback."
It is basically a gathering of people who are answering targeted and specific questions in detail.

Why hold a focus group?

All research is good, however a focus group has many more advantages to other research. This is because the researcher can get qualitative information, a lot of opinions and views- that are not random and are focused on the product being analysed.

What are the advantages of a focus group?

Some of the advantages of completing a focus group is that the leader of the focus group can see where the discussion is going and then either try to develop on the answers being given or change to a new question if the discussion isn't working.
All the people at the group can consider each others points that they might not have thought of or gathered an opinion on themselves- this would be good as it would aid the discussion as they can agree/disagree with each other.

What are the disadvantages of a focus group?

If there is only a small group of people- all with very similar interests- then the discussion may not flow as well as wanted and the leader may not get many ideas or contributions as feedback. That would mean that it isn't a successful focus group.

How will a focus group help get advice for your music video?

It will help us get the advice that we want as we can structure what type of topics they discuss. We can also aid their conversation if we feel what they are talking about is not relevant to what we are doing.

What is the importance of a focus group?

By holding a focus group, it means we can get some good quality information from a range of audience perspectives. This is good for us because we can use the information when creating our music video- taking everything they said into consideration, and using it to our advantage- targeting our main audience, then at the same time inserting elements that could also target different demographics other than our specified target.

Importance Of An Audience

The audience/consumer in any industry are among the most important aspect as they are the ones it is all for. The audience of music videos specifically have a lot of power over how well both song and artist are received.
The audience can shape, form, develop and criticise the industry- and now because of the massive increase in technological communication and global reach- it is much easier to reach a large audience- but that also means reaching the audience that it wasn’t aimed at.
Each type of audience member can influence the other, for example critics can influence the way one we view music videos, along with friends/family, the internet and music channels such as 4 Music, Viva and M.TV.

A song can get much more attention because of its music video, and with the Internet and YouTube, this can create a globally recognised music video- and one reason for the audience is to measure the success of the media product.
An example of this would be the video for ‘Gangnam Style’ which manages to get over 1 Billion views on YouTube. The audience for the song wasn’t necessarily mass, however through word of mouth and communication the video become recognised by many different stereotypes of people.

This shows the importance of an audience and how they can change the success of the video.

Planning Location

This video is about our choice of location for the video and why we are choosing to film there.
After discussing together the different ways we were imagining the video, we all agreed that Southend would be a great location. We are focusing on having a 'good time', being creative and inventive, while also having fun with it.
