The audience/consumer in any industry are among the most
important aspect as they are the ones it is all for. The audience of music
videos specifically have a lot of power over how well both song and artist are
received.
The audience can shape, form, develop and criticise the industry- and
now because of the massive increase in technological communication and global
reach- it is much easier to reach a large audience- but that also means
reaching the audience that it wasn’t aimed at.
Each type of audience member can
influence the other, for example critics can influence the way one we view music
videos, along with friends/family, the internet and music channels such as 4 Music, Viva and M.TV.
A song can
get much more attention because of its music video, and with the Internet and
YouTube, this can create a globally recognised music video- and one reason for
the audience is to measure the success of the media product.
An example of this
would be the video for ‘Gangnam Style’ which manages to get over 1 Billion
views on YouTube. The audience for the song wasn’t necessarily mass, however
through word of mouth and communication the video become recognised by many
different stereotypes of people.
